New driver's licenses are issued by our branches throughout the state. This page provides you a summary of requirements for obtaining your driver's license for the first time and for renewing or replacing your driver's license are outlined on this page.

Obtaining a Driving Record (MVR) Tennessee Highway Patrol. Apply for Teen/Graduated Driver License. Locate a Self-Service Kiosk. If you've passed your standard driving test, you're allowed to drive the following vehicles: AM – 2 or 3 wheeled vehicles with a maximum speed of over 25 km/h, but no more than 45 km/h (28 mph) It's worth noting that drivers can no longer ride motor tricycles with a provisional licence. Foreign mission members who obtain or maintain a driver's license from one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or any territory governed by the United States, will be required to pay a service fee of $100 prior to issuance of a Department of State driver's license.

Probationary Driver's License

If you are under the age of 21 when you obtain your Indiana driver's license, your license is considered probationary. To obtain a probationary driver's license, you must meet Indiana's age requirements below and have held a learner's permit for 180 days (approximately six months).

  • Age Requirements for a Probationary Driver's License

    If you have successfully completed an approved driver education program you must be at least 16 years and 90 days old to obtain a driver's license.

    If you have not successfully completed an approved driver education program you must be at least 16 years and 270 days old to obtain a driver's license.

    A probationary driver's license cannot be renewed until your 21st birthday. You will have 30 days after your 21st birthday to renew your driver's license before you will be required to pay an administrative penalty.

  • Log of Supervised Driving

    Indiana law requires persons with a learner's permit to complete at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a licensed instructor or:

    If the individual is less than 18 years of age:

    • A licensed driver, with valid driving privileges, who is at least 25 years of age and related by blood, marriage, or legal status
    • A spouse, with valid driving privileges, who is at least 21 years of age
    • An individual with valid driving privileges who is licensed as a driver education instructor and is working under the direction of a driver training school
    • An individual with valid driving privileges who is certified as a driver rehabilitation specialist recognized by the BMV and is employed through a driver rehabilitation program

    If the individual is over 18 years of age:

    • A licensed driver, with valid driving privileges, who is at least 25 years of age
    • A spouse, with valid driving privileges, who is at least 21 years of age

    At least 10 hours of supervised driving practice must be nighttime driving. The practice time must be maintained in a Log of Supervised Driving and presented to the BMV at the time of application for a driver's license. If you have a daylight-only restriction on your learner's permit, you do not need to complete the 10 hours of nighttime driving; however, you must still complete the 50 hours total.

  • Financial Liability for Injury or Damage

    Applicants for a learner's permit or driver's license who are less than 18 years of age must have one of the following adults sign a sworn or affirmed statement of financial liability in person at a branch. The lawful (IC 9-24-9-3) order of preference is:

    1. The parent having custody of the minor applicant or a designee of the custodial parent specified by the custodial parent
    2. The noncustodial parent (as defined in IC 31-9-2-83) of the minor applicant or a designee of the noncustodial parent specified by the noncustodial parent
    3. The guardian having custody of the minor applicant
    4. In the absence of a person described in one (1) through three (3), any other adult who is willing to assume the obligations imposed by the provisions of this chapter (IC 9-24-9)

    An adult who co-signs for financial liability swears or affirms financial liability for a minor applicant and agrees to be responsible jointly and severally with the minor applicant for all damage that results from operating a motor vehicle. The adult who co-signs for financial liability must present a valid form of identification, including a U.S. government-issued photo identification card that displays a United States address. The BMV does not accept Matricula Consular cards for purposes of financial liability. Any form of identity must be a U.S. government-issued identity document.

Standard Driver's License

If you are 21 years of age or older, your Indiana driver's license is not probationary.

  • How Long is My Driver's License Valid?

    If you are a US citizen, you may renew your license up to twenty-four (24) months prior to its expiration. An operator written test is not required when you renew a driver's license, unless you have accumulated six or more points on your driver record since your previous renewal or your license has been expired for more than 180 days.

    If you have lawful permanent or temporary status, you may renew your driver's license at any BMV branch up to 30 days before the license expires. If you have Temporary Lawful Status your license is valid until the end date of your lawful presence OR for;

    1. Six years if you are less than 75 years of age,
    2. Three years if you are at least 75 years of age and less than 85 years of age, or
    3. Two years if you are at least 85 years of age.

Examinations and Screening

Vision Screening

All applicants are require to take a vision screening, which measures your visual acuity.

Written Test

If you are an Indiana resident and apply for a driver's license, you most likely have already passed your written test. However, there are situations where you may need to take another written test, such as:

  • You are renewing from a probationary driver's license to a driver's license and have six or more points on your driver record.
  • You recently moved to Indiana from another country and are applying for a driver's license.
  • Your driver's license has been expired for more than 180 days.
  • You wish to add endorsements to your driver's license or commercial driver's license.

As of July 1, 2019, if you are moving to Indiana from another state and hold a valid driver's license in that state you are no longer required to complete a written test. Note: Some written tests are required for transferring a CDL, motorcycle, or for-hire endorsement.

You must arrive at least one hour before a branch closes to take a written test. You do not need to schedule an appointment for a written test unless you need to have the test read to you, you are deaf or hard of hearing. Appointments for applicants who are deaf or hard of hearing can be made by a branch manager or by calling the BMV's Contact Center at 1-888-692-6841.

Driving Test

You must arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to take a driving test.

Renewing or Replacing a License

You may renew or replace your driver's license online if:

  • your name and address have remained the same since the last time you received a license;
  • you do not have restriction or endorsement that prevents online processing; and
  • you are not required to take an examination; and
  • your previous renewal transaction was completed in a branch.

You will need to provide your date of birth and Social Security number in order to renew or replace your driver's license online.

Endorsements and Restrictions

Endorsements and restrictions change the circumstances in which an individual may operate a motor vehicle. Some endorsements and restrictions also apply to identification cards.

Additional Licenses and Endorsements

Indiana also issues licenses for commercial driver's licenses along with motorcycle and for-hire endorsements.

Effective January 1, 2017, the BMV began issuing a for-hire endorsement in place of a public passenger chauffer's (PPC) or chauffer's license. A PPC or chauffer's license issued prior to January 1, 2017 will remain valid until the expiration date printed on the license.

Drivers with Disabilities

Format

If you are at least 18 years of age, disabled, and have successfully completed driver rehabilitation training conducted by a certified driver rehabilitation specialist recognized by the BMV, you may apply for a driver's license without a learner's permit on your record or a completed Log of Supervised Driving.

You will be required to provide the BMV branch with a report of the training received from the driver rehabilitation specialist.

Out-of-Country Licenses

An out-of-country driver's license cannot be used for identification purposes. An out-of-country driver's license must be in the English language or presented with a verifiably accurate English translation of the document.

If you have an out-of-country driver's license and intend to become a resident of Indiana, you must pass the vision screening, written test, and driving test to obtain an Indiana driver's license.

All documents proving your identity, Social Security number, lawful status and Indiana residency will be verified through a central verification process. The BMV will issue an interim license, valid for 30 days, authorizing the holder to drive pending authentication of documents submitted.

Once the BMV has verified the documentation that you have provided, you will receive the license, learner's permit, or identification card. If the documents cannot be verified, you will receive a letter explaining the determination and your rights to request an administrative hearing to review the determination.

Translated Document Requirements

  • The translation must be typed on a separate page on the letterhead of a government entity, accredited educational institution or translation agency.

Correcting/Changing Your Maryland License or Permit

If you are using a name other than your birth name, or changing the name on your current Maryland license, you must bring the document that initiated the change of name, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree or court ordered name change, to the MVA to correct your license.

A corrected license can be issued for changes to one's name, address, height, or weight, to add or remove an organ donor designation, to add or remove certain restrictions or to add a veteran status designation. To change your address or organ donor designation, you may do so online, here or at an MVA self-serve kiosk. Or you can complete the change of address form (VR-154) and mail it to the MVA. There is a fee for a corrected license. But there is no fee for the change of address card, which should be carried with your license. You will be mailed the card or corrected license

Please request a duplicate driver's license or ID card online with the new online option here or by MVA Self-Serve Kiosk. These transactions will no longer be handled over the counter and the duplicate driver's license or ID card will be mailed to the address on record at the MVA.

Lost Maryland License or Permit

If your license has been stolen, you must apply in person at an MVA branch office for a duplicate license providing there are no changes to the information on your license. Exchanging an Out-of-State License for a Maryland License

New Maryland residents must obtain a Maryland driver's license within 60 days for a noncommercial driver's license and within 30 days if it is a commercial driver's license (CDL).
  • You will need your out-of-state license(s), if you do not have the license in your possession, you will need to present a certified driving record from the licensing agency.
  • You must pass a vision screening and one that is provided by a doctor must have been administered within the previous 12 months.
    • The vision screening can be administered at the MVA branch office; or
    • You can submit a completed vision screening form (DL-0​43 or DL-043A)

If licensed for less than 18 months, you will be issued a Maryland provisional license. Click here for more information on the provisional license.

  • If your license is expired for one year or more, you are required to pass a knowledge and driver's skills test.
  • Proof of age, identity and residency, are required. Please use the our online document guide to determine what you will need to bring with you to the MVA branch office.
  • Please pay the required fees.
  • An out-of-state learner's permit cannot be exchanged for a Maryland learner's permit. You must meet all the requirements of a new learner's permit.
  • You will be asked to surrender your out-of-state driver's license before you can obtain a Maryland one.

Active Military

  1. If you are on active duty military, some states grant an extension of the driver's license validity period. The extension is for active duty U.S. military personnel and their dependants while they are stationed outside of their home licensing state. If the out-of-state driver's license has been expired for one (1) year or more and the state grants a military extension, you will be required to provide:
  • Acceptable proof of your current active duty status or military dependant status (i.e. military photo ID card), or
  • Recent discharge records (each state grants a certain amount of days after discharge, and depending on your state's extension, the testing requirements can be waived);and
  • Proof of age, identity and residency, use our online document guide to determine what you will need to bring with you; and
  • Pass a vision screening; and
  • Pay the required fees.

​Exchanging an Armed Forces License for a Maryland License

U.S. Armed Forces Military operators permits or licenses are not recognized as proof of having a current driver's license. Armed force's licenses must be accompanied by a U.S. state or a foreign country driver's license.

If applicants are unable to provide acceptable proof of ever holding a license from another state or country, they must be processed as a new driver and must complete all of the Maryland Graduated Licensing System requirements.

Driving Without License Florida

  • You must present the out-of-country license (may be valid or expired.)
    • If you do not have your license, you must present a driving record from the country's license issuing authority. The driving record should be accompanied by an apostille or a letter from the country's embassy verifying the driving record.
  • The out-of-country license may be required to be accompanied by an international driver's license or translated into English by an approved MVA translator.
  • You must pass a vision screening and one that is provided by a doctor must have been administered within the previous 12 months.
    • The vision screening can be administered at the MVA branch office; or
    • You can submit a completed vision screening form (DL-043 or DL-043a)
  • You must complete a 3-hour drug & alcohol education program if you have never been licensed in the U.S.
  • You must pass a knowledge test and a driving test in a motor vehicle that you must provide. However, if you are converting or transferring a valid driver's license that has not been expired for more than one year from the following places, you do not have to take the knowledge and skills test. The license must have been issued by a U.S. Territory; American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands or Northern Mariana. If you were born before September 30, 1979 in the Panama Canal Zone, or the license is from Canada, Yukon Territory, or France you do not have to take the tests. However, if your license is from the Republic of Korea (South), the Federal Republic of Germany, Taiwan (Republic of China) or Japan and it is expired, you will have to take all tests.   • If licensed for less than 18 months, you will be issued a Maryland Provisional License.
  • If you have never held a license, you must obtain a learner's permit.
